Asteriscus (As). Otolith
related with lagena otolithic end-organ.
Antirostrum (Ar). Anterior
and dorsal projection of the otolith sagitta, above to excisura major or ostial notch.
Cauda (Cd). Posterior
portion of the sulcus acusticus.
Colliculum (Clm). Inner
impression of the sulcus acusticus.
Collum (Co). Junction of
ostial and caudal portion of sulcus acusticus.
Crista inferior (Ci).
Ventral border of the sulcus acusticus.
Crista superior (Cs).
Dorsal border of the sulcus acusticus.
Inner ear. Main sensorial
structure related with auditory and vestibular sense in vertebrates. In Osteichthyan fishes was
composed by a pars superior (formed by the three semicircular channels and the utriculus) and a pars
inferior (the sacculus and lagena).
Excisura major (Ej). Notch
placed in the rostral (anterior) rim of the sagitta, between rostrum and antirostrum (if is
present).
Excisura minor (En). Notch
placed in the caudal (posterior) rim of the sagitta, between postrostrum and pararostrum (if is
present).
Lapillus (Lp). Otolith
related with utriculus otolithic end-organ.
Lagena (Lg). Otolithic
end-organ placed in the anterior zone in the pars inferior of the inner ear. In Ostariphysan fishes
is the most developed end-organ.
Lobes (L). The minor
rounded protrusions along the dorsal and ventral edge of the sagitta.
Ostium (Os). Anterior
portion of the sulcus acusticus.
Otolith. Structure of carbonate calcium (main aragonite crystals) present in the inner ear of
Osteichthyan fishes. The are three pairs (two sagittae, two asterisci and two lapilli).
Otolithic end-organ. Structure of the Osteichthyan inner ear formed by an otolith, an
otolithic membrane and an adjacent epithelium, including sensory epithelium (macula). The are three
pairs (two sacculi, two lagenae and two utriculi).
Postrostrum (Pr). Small
expansion of posterior and ventral rim of the otolith sagitta, under the excisura minor.
Pararostrum (Pa). Small
expansion of posterior and dorsal rim, above the excisura minor.
Rostrum (R). Anterior and
ventral projection of the sagitta. In many especies is a very clear landmark.
Sacculus (Sc). Otolithic
end-organ placed in the pars inferior of the inner ear. In non-Ostariphysan fishes is the most
developed end-organ.
Sagitta (Sg). Otolith
related with sacculus otolithic end-organ. Usually, it shows the highest variability between
otoliths.
Sulcus acusticus (Sa). A
groove along the medial surface of the sagitta. Is closely associated with sensorial epithelium or
macula.
Utriculus (Ut). Otolithic
end-organ placed in the anterior zone in the pars superior of the inner ear closed to semicircular
channels.
